Frequently Asked Questions About “Kind Hearted Woman”

The program looks at critical issues including sexual abuse, domestic violence, alcoholism, and the struggles to improve oneself and the lives of our families. David Sutherland is a lauded independent filmmaker whose focus is creating documentary portraits. Never mind closing the distance between viewer and object viewed, this filmmaker all but obliterates that distinction through his own intense identification and empathy with the people he films.

I was introduced to David through my local victim service program director Linda Thompson. I was terrified that entire week before he came to the Spirit Lake Reservation, because there were only two other people who knew parts of my story at the time.

As a result of working on the film and opening up my heart, I began to grow as a mother and as a woman. I sobered up, and I began to speak out. I saw my faults, weaknesses and worked through them.

I found my own strength the more and more I told my story. My children also wanted to tell their story as they saw and felt the honor of speaking out to people who listened, who cared, and most importantly, who BELIEVED in them. Everything I put in place for myself, I also put in place for my children, as they need to find their voice and know they mattered as well.

I have family meetings to discuss changes in our lives such as, new job, new home, school, etc. I started this to build a strong foundation for them after they were returned to my care.

They saw me grow and began to grow themselves. They would talk to David about whatever was going on in their lives at the time; he is a very important part of our family. He may never admit it but he saved a woman and two children. Just by listening. My hope is that as many Native and non-Native Americans as possible see this film about overcoming the trauma of abuse, chemical dependency, and sexual assault.

Robin and Darren divorced after the filming of Kind Hearted Woman. She has primary custody of both Darian and Anthony, and both children are doing great.

Robin is proud that her kids have grown up to be humble, honorable young adults. Anthony will enter high school next year and Darian will be going off to college. Robin communicated closely with her children about making Kind Hearted Woman before, during and after production and would not have agreed to participate if her children were not actively and enthusiastically engaged in the film. Both Darian and Anthony continue to strongly support this decision. Both Darian and Anthony are doing great!

Darian is looking forward to attending college in Wyoming. Anthony relishes in the fact that he is now the tallest member of the family! He also wants to attend college in the future and hopes to one day become an auto technician.

What she did not know was that her decision would temporarily cost her custody of her two children in tribal court, or that her teenage daughter would disclose that she too had been sexually abused — by her own father, a development that led to a federal trial and, for the filmmaker and the producers, ethical soul searching. Like Mr. Sutherland, 67, set out to deal with the subject of abuse, he said in an interview in his Boston sound-mixing studio.

At one point, on camera, she learned that her ex-husband had been similarly abusing their daughter. The two-part film aired in April as a joint production of Frontline and Independent Lens. She had a spirit but it was gone. It was lost. And all of a sudden comes this crazy man who listened to me.

PBS’ ‘Kind Hearted Woman’ moves beyond a portrait of poverty

There was good reason: After a lifetime of physical and sexual abuse, her heart was still bursting with empathy for others. The daughter of an alcoholic mother, Poor Bear was molested by her foster father at age 3. But today, at 35, she gives a voice to others who have suffered sexual abuse.

But to stop with that description is to draw a line around the subjects that does them a disservice. There is nothing programmatic about these films; they are not out to make a point but to show you a life. When we meet her, she is newly sober, back from rehab and having her apartment spiritually purified. You think for a moment that this is going to be a story about staying straight, but it turns into something quite different: Its business encompasses sexual abuse, child endangerment, divided families, incompetent bureaucracy and failed justice, but it is also about love, perseverance, child-rearing, growing up, self-knowledge and life in the North. Sutherland did not set out to make a film about Native Americans.
